Hi, I’m Amber Menjivar, the author of Small Heart, Big Beats! and the founder of The Courageous Kids Club.

The idea for Small Heart, Big Beats! came to me in January 2022 through a dream—one where I had written a children’s book about a superhero with a heart condition. That dream became reality because of the inspiration I found in my grandson, Anthony Jordan, who lives every day with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS).

Anthony’s condition means the left side of his heart is small and underdeveloped, unable to properly pump blood to his body. Despite this challenge, his courage, joy, and resilience became the driving force behind the story. Because of his impact, Anthony is credited with “Inspiring Contributions” in the book.

Small Heart, Big Beats! is more than just a story—it’s a celebration of kids with extraordinary challenges who show us what true courage looks like. My hope is that you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it, and that together, through The Courageous Kids Club, we can continue to shine a light on children whose big hearts inspire us all.

While writing Small Heart, Big Beats!, I was inspired to create a children’s book series where real-life kids facing disability and disease become the heroes. While writing Small Heart, Big Beats!, I was inspired to create a children’s book series where real-life kids facing disability and disease become the heroes. Each child in the series is given divinely gifted powers, musical abilities, and character traits such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. With these gifts, they learn to encourage themselves, inspire others, and make a positive difference in the world.

This vision grew into The Courageous Kids Club—with Small Heart, Big Beats! as the first book in the series.

The Courageous Kids Club exists to bring hope, encouragement, and inspiration to children and families facing disability and disease. Our mission is not only to tell stories of courage but also to stand alongside organizations that provide research, awareness, and vital support.

That’s why a portion of every sale of Small Heart, Big Beats! is donated to Camp Taylor, a medically supervised heart camp where kids like Jordan—and their families—can experience joy, community, and healing.

Every book purchased makes an impact. Together, we can help kids with small hearts live out their big beats.

Thank you for believing in this mission and supporting through your book purchases!
